Us – Movie review

First of all, what’s it about ? It’s about a family going back to the mother’s previous house in California. They want to have a good time there on holidays, but events will bring to the surface horrific memories to the mother. She knows, like back in the time, something similar is about to happen again.

Speaking about the change of mindset of the mother played by Lupita Nyong’o, let’s begin by remarking the acting. She played in “12 years a slave”, “Black Panther” and in “Star Wars VIII” and is really convincing in the role of someone progressively losing her mind.

“Us” had been directed and written by Jordan Peele. He had only directed “Get Out” 2 years ago before this one. It was already a horror movie, which has shown to be very popular and received pretty good reviews. Spectators liked it because instead of only being gore, Jordan Peele did a movie in which we had to put all the pieces together to understand what was going on. We were trying to figure everything out until the final twist, and that was enjoyable. Consequently, we could have good hope on “Us”.

Indeed, “Us” is still based on the same model, with evidences spread here and there that you can use to understand everything before the end, but it won’t be easy. By the way, it’s amusing to see how Jordan Peele considers very well his spectator on the one hand considering the plot, but still takes time to explain some stupid details on the other hand. In the end, it even offers several possible interpretations. To be honest, the puzzle is clearly more complex than in his previous movie, and we also completely loose the humorous side “Get Out” had.

Therefore, even if the story is also about a black family, this time the subject isn’t about race and discrimination but more about the dark sides of individuals and groups. It’s frankly more centered on the horror aspect while “Get out” was more a thriller.

On the technical side, cinematography was awesome. It’s been shot by Mike Gioulakis who also shot “It follows” back in 2014, also a horror movie. The camera was placed at so many spots on tense scenes to shoot a single one from different point of views that it adds to the feeling of losing control. It’s classic for horror movies, but I loved chosen spots on this one. I also want to note the vivid colors used. It’s overall fairly dark, but they still use bright colors, making the picture high on contrast. As opposed to one previous horror movie released in November, the drab “overlord”. “Us” is definitely more impressive than “Get out”.

Interview of Lucas, an Italian student

Hi Lucas ! So you come from Italy, can you tell us from where exactly ?

Hi ! Yes, of course ! My hometown is called Case Rosse, it’s situated just next to Rome.

For how long have you been in France ?

I’m in France since September, so it’s been 4 months if we take out December considering I took a one-month break at Christmas.
I’m here in order to pursue my studies abroad. I’m a PhD student in philosophy and I can get (at most) half of my lessons outside of Italy. So I can take this full year to travel in France and I will see for the first semester of next year.

Why France among all ?

I came in France 2 years ago for a week on my holydays, and I noticed that being in a French country suited me much more than an English one. English is for me a very useful language even here in France, but I am much more motivated to learn French.

However French doesn’t seem as easy as English to me.

You’re right, French isn’t that simple but as an Italian I still manage to understand quiet well and to express myself more or less properly, simply because Italian is very close to French and in addition, since I’m studying Latin, it’s even easier. But of course, it doesn’t work everytime, for example, to stop is “fermarsi” while it is “arrêter” and not “fermer” in French. Still, French is far from being a barrier to me.

How do you feel in France now that you live here ?

I must admit that life seems more comfortable from my point of view in France rather than in Italy. For example, just take the transport system. Either you take your car or public transports, it’s a mess in Rome. You have access to only 2 underground lines in a city bigger than Paris. Also, weather is more pleasant here.
But more importantly, current Italian political life and job market aren’t at their best. So, for the moment, I feel better in France.

Why are tennis balls yellow ?

Did you know ? Tennis balls haven’t always been yellow. At first they were white, like on the picture.

Unfortunately, when television arrived, it was a little complicated to follow the ball on black and white screens. They found out that yellow was easier to see than white on those old screens. Indeed, the contrast between the ball and the ground was higher on every type of court (grass, clay or hardcourts of concrete).

Therefore, in 1972, the International Tennis Federation made it official that tennis balls will be white or yellow. Indeed, you can still play with white ones in official competitions even if yellow ones became the standard.

By the way, if you want to know more about the strict specifications of a tennis ball, it has to have a diameter between 6.35 and 6.67 cm, a weight between 56.70 and 58.45 g and it has to bounce higher than 1.34 m but lower than 1.47 m when dropped at 2.50 m above the ground.

Movie review of november : A Star Is Born

A Star Is Born is about two musicians, Jackson Maine (played by Bradley Cooper) and Ally (played by a real musician, Lady Gaga). They meet each other in a bar just after one of Jackson’s concert. He is well established while she just sings in some bar but he will give her a chance on stage after hearing her. From there will start a big ascension for her, upstaging Jackson.

Bradley Cooper is a well-known actor for his leading roles in Very Bad Trip in 2009, Happiness Therapy in 2012 or more recently in Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper in 2014. Again, he does a very good job, so does Lady Gaga for her first leading role in a fiction movie. Besides acting, Bradley Cooper, being the director and co-writer, signs his first movie. The story is based on a novel by William Wellman and the 1976’s A Star Is Born. Last but not least, cinematography has been made by the great Matthew Libatique who also filmed Black Swan in 2010 and Requiem For A Dream in 2000.

We can easily divide it in two parts (be aware of spoilers in this paragraph): the meeting, the romance, the Jackson’s fame and Ally’s discovery to the public with duet songs on one hand; and on the another hand, the decline of Jackson in his illness, the beginning of Ally’s songwriting and singing carrier in a completely different style (not necessarily understood by Jackson by the way) and the decline of Jackson’s fame.

The first part was really good: beautiful to see and experience with catchy and impressive songs, but I kind of disliked the second one. I’ve found it a little too much predictable and chatty and noted a decrease in the music scenes’ quality. It was very linear without much surprise and the urge to explain everything happening on screen bored me sometimes. However, don’t let it dissuade you from watching it if you want to see a light romance and listen to rock or pop music with the quality of a cinema’s equipment.

You can see it this week at La Nef or Pathé Echirolles.
